LEADERSHIP & CURRENT ROLES

Dr. El Zein currently serves as the Director General of TechnoValley at the University of Business and Technology (UBT) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Under her leadership, TechnoValley has emerged as a thriving innovation ecosystem with incubators, accelerators, and a dedicated seed fund program, all strategically aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

She was also the founder and the first Dean of Scientific Research at UBT, where she established the university’s research governance framework, launched interdisciplinary programs, and laid the foundation for its transformation into a research-driven institution.

Earlier in her career, Dr. El Zein served as a Research Scientist at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where she conducted advanced research in nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage, contributing significantly to the field of third-generation solar cells and quantum dot technologies.

She serves as a strategic consultant and advisor to several international organizations, providing expertise in research, innovation, sustainability, and governance.

Dr. El Zein holds editorial and scientific advisory roles across a range of global academic journals and conferences, and is a grand judge for Intel ISEF and a frequent keynote speaker on topics including energy, nanotechnology, and women’s leadership in STEM.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Dr. El Zein holds a PhD in Nano-Optoelectronics from the University of Lille, France, with high distinction, and a Master’s in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Lebanese University. She has conducted advanced research as a scientist and visiting scholar at KAUST, King Abdulaziz University, and several leading European research centers.

Her technical expertise spans the design and development of nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage, flexible quantum dot solar cells, solid-state Zn-air batteries, and smart biosensors. She holds a tri-regional patent on ZnO nanostructures, granted in the US, Europe, and UK.

PUBLICATIONS, PATENTS, AND RECOGNITION

Dr. El Zein has authored over 30 scientific papers in high-impact journals, books, and conference proceedings, and co-edited titles such as Novel ZnO-Based Nanostructures and ZnO Nanostructured for Photovoltaic Applications. Her landmark contributions include the development of 3rd generation eco-friendly solar cells and advanced CO₂ and biosensors for medical applications.

In recognition of her global contributions, she has been featured by WIPO as one of the first Arab women from Saudi Arabia to hold a nanotechnology patent and was shortlisted as a finalist for the Reuters Global Energy Transition Award 2025. She has received over 25 honors, including the Makkah Excellence Award in Environment, LEWAS Woman of Achievement, and the Empower Her in Energy Award.

ADVOCACY FOR WOMEN IN STEM AND SUSTAINABILITY

Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. El Zein is a relentless advocate for the empowerment of women and youth in STEM. She has mentored hundreds of students and professionals, initiated academic-industry bridge programs, and developed a unique Master’s in Tolerance and Global Peace in collaboration with international universities.
